Description
Hotel Acadia is pleased to welcome you to its three oldest townhouses in all of North America. Reputed to have been built around 1822 by Chief Justice Jonathan Sewell, they illustrate the tendency of newcomers to reproduce models of houses from their native homeland. With the exception of a few minor adaptations, such as the light above the exterior entrance, these houses may well end up in Britain, more specifically in a 19th century Scottish city.
From their construction until about 1930, these prestigious residences belonged to the English-speaking bourgeoisie of Quebec. Around 1920, Dr Corrigan held a private hospital at 43, Sainte-Ursule. Around 1959-1960, Lyne Baillargeon operates a rooming house at 39 and 43 Sainte-Ursule. She will give the name of Maison Acadienne, in honour of its place of origin, the village of Petit-Rocher in Acadia. Then in 1982, the Côté Family will acquirer the propreties and started renovation. Ermitage building located across the street on Ste-Ursule and later followed Hotel Louisbourg located on St-Louis street. The goal was to revive historic complex. It became what we know today as Hotels Nouvelle-France.
